CNN multichoice awardsBusinessDay’s Obinna Emelike has been nominated for the CNN/Multi-Choice African Journalist Award billed for Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on October 18, 2014.

The competition which is now in its 19th year, received nominations from 28 finalists from 10 countries across the continent, including French and Portuguese speaking Africa.

Announcing the finalists, Ferial Haffajee, chairperson of the independent judging panel, said: “2013 was a huge news year, and the stories from our continent set a global agenda.

The judges were pleased with the quality of entries, and were impressed by the depth of specialist beat reporting. In addition, they noted the growing sophistication of the use of images and pictures across all platforms.”

In a statement, Nico Meyer, CEO MultiChoice Africa, was quoted as saying, “MultiChoice Africa congratulates all finalists and thanks our esteemed panel of judges for taking time to select the very best of African journalism.

These awards demonstrate CNN and MultiChoice’s commitment to the development of media in Africa and this is a very special year as we celebrate our 10th year of our partnership.”

Tony Maddox, executive vice-president and managing director of CNN International, enthused, “I have witnessed the quality and excellence of work in this competition strengthen year-on-year, and I’m proud that it continues to maintain its place as the most prestigious Pan African journalist awards.”

The finalists will enjoy all-expenses paid four-day programme of workshops, media forums and networking in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, culminating in a gala award ceremony on Saturday, October 18, 2014.

In a related development, Funke Osai-Brown and Daniel Obi also of BusinessDay have been nominated among top 10 persons across Africa in the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) for 2014.

The recognition awards were designed to celebrate journalists in Africa who have helped to project the awards and the motion picture industry to the rest of the world
