Kharg Island: What to know about Iran’s oil lifeline

Donald Trump, US President has renewed warnings that the United States could escalate its response against Iran, including targeting key places in its oil network, as tensions sharpen over access to the Strait of Hormuz. The latest US strikes on military sites on Kharg Island appear to reflect that pressure, even as Washington stops short of hitting the oil infrastructure at the heart of Iran’s economy.

The strikes, confirmed by US officials and reported by CNN, were described as limited in scope. Vice President JD Vance said they do not represent a shift in strategy, signalling that Washington is calibrating its actions while keeping open the option of broader measures if Iran does not comply with US demands.

“We were going to strike some military targets on Kharg Island, and I believe we have done ​so,” Vance ​said.

What is Kharg island and why does it matter

Kharg Island is a small coral outcrop in the Persian Gulf, but it serves as the backbone of Iran’s oil exports. Around 90 percent of the country’s crude passes through its terminals, where deep water jetties allow supertankers to load oil directly for global markets.

The island also functions as a vast storage hub, with capacity for tens of millions of barrels, making it essential to Iran’s ability to sustain exports during periods of disruption. Its importance has been recognised for decades, with US intelligence assessments describing it as central to Iran’s economic survival.

Because of this, Kharg Island sits at the intersection of military strategy and economic leverage. Analysts say any serious damage to the site could sharply reduce Iran’s oil revenues and ripple through global energy markets.

For now, however, early Iranian assessments suggest the core export infrastructure remains intact and operations continue. But with rhetoric hardening and military activity increasing, Kharg Island remains a critical location in a confrontation that could escalate quickly.
