Kemi Nandap, comptroller general of the Service, has ordered the immediate investigation into allegations of extortion by its personnel along the Lagos–Seme border corridor
This follows a surge of online reports and complaints accusing officers stationed at various checkpoints of demanding illegal payments from travellers and transport operators.
The directive was disclosed in a statement issued by Akinsola Akinlabi, service public relations officer, who said the comptroller general strongly condemned the conduct described in the reports.
Nandap reportedly characterised the alleged acts as unacceptable and a clear violation of the Service’s core values and operational standards.
“The Nigeria Immigration Service will not tolerate any behaviour that undermines public trust or compromises the integrity of its operations,” the statement emphasised.
The Service said it has mandated a comprehensive investigation to identify all officers involved in the alleged misconduct.
It assured that any personnel found culpable would face immediate disciplinary action in line with established rules and regulations.
Reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, the NIS pledged to maintain efficient and lawful migration processes across all entry and exit points in the country.
The agency stressed that safeguarding public confidence remains central to its operations.
As part of efforts to strengthen accountability, the service called on members of the public to report cases of misconduct through its 24-hour contact centre and official social media platforms.
It added that internal monitoring mechanisms are being reinforced to prevent future occurrences.
The Service noted that the latest action underscores the NIS’s broader mandate to facilitate lawful migration while upholding discipline, transparency, and professionalism across its commands.
