China has officially completed the world’s first large-scale highway project constructed with almost zero human intervention.
A move that feels more like science fiction than civil engineering as the 158-kilometer (98-mile) stretch of the Beijing–Hong Kong–Macao Expressway one of the country’s busiest arteries was recently resurfaced and expanded by a coordinated fleet of AI-driven drones, autonomous pavers, and robotic rollers.
The project, led by industrial giants such as Sany Group and XCMG made use of intelligent machinery that operated with millimetric precision.
Unlike traditional construction sites defined by workers in high-visibility vests, this site was managed by a central AI brain that choreographed the movements of autonomous Pavers outfitted with high-precision sensors.
These machines laid asphalt with a thickness consistency that human operators rarely achieve.
Robotic rollers with a fleet of 13- to 30-ton rollers synchronised their compaction patterns using BeiDou satellite navigation, ensuring the road surface was uniform and durable.
AI Drone Swarms as dtones hovered overhead, performing real-time 3D topographical mapping and monitoring the asphalt’s temperature and density.
Engineers reported that the AI-led process reduced human error to nearly zero. The zero edge-to-edge operation allowed for seamless paving right up to the curbstones, eliminating the need for manual trimming.
The completion of this ‘Golden Channel’ segment marks a major milestone in China’s AI Plus initiative, a national strategy to weave artificial intelligence into the fabric of traditional industries.
By 2026, the Ministry of Transport aims to expand these smart highways across the country, featuring integrated charging for electric vehicles and sensors that talk directly to autonomous cars.
While the project has sparked global debate regarding the future of manual labor in construction, the technological success has proven that the impossible machine of fully automated infrastructure is no longer a prototype but its the new standard.
