A new artificial intelligence agent, ‘Dobby’, is offering a glimpse into a future where mobile apps could become obsolete, according to a report by Business Insider Africa.
Developed as part of an experiment by Andrej Karpathy, an AI researcher, Dobby is designed to replace the fragmented ecosystem of apps by handling tasks through simple natural language commands.
A world without apps?
Karpathy revealed that the AI agent can control various connected systems in his home, including music, lighting, and security without requiring users to switch between multiple apps.
Instead, Dobby interacts directly with devices, discovering and managing them autonomously.
The system works by scanning local networks, identifying connected devices, and even tapping into undocumented APIs to execute commands.
This allows it to function as a unified interface for tasks that would typically require several different applications.
From tapping screens to talking to AI
The development reveals a broader shift in how users may interact with technology. Rather than navigating through app interfaces, users could rely on conversational AI agents to perform tasks seamlessly.
Karpathy noted that what once required juggling multiple apps can now be handled through a single AI interface, suggesting that the traditional app-based model may be increasingly inefficient in comparison.
Challenges
Despite its promise, Dobby is still in its early stages and requires significant technical expertise to set up and operate.
This limits its accessibility for mainstream users for now. However, the concept points to a growing trend in AI development, which is the rise of autonomous agents capable of simplifying digital interactions and reducing reliance on conventional software platforms.
Dobby as a threat to the app economy
If widely adopted, systems like Dobby could disrupt the current app economy, where companies depend heavily on user engagement through standalone applications.
AI agents could act as intermediaries, thereby reducing the need for users to interact directly with apps at all.
As generative AI continues to evolve, conversational interfaces may soon replace the tap-and-swipe model that has defined the smartphone era for over a decade.
