Italy’s sports minister Andrea Abodi has dismissed suggestions that the Azzurri could replace Iran at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the idea as “not appropriate” and firmly ruling out any administrative route back into the tournament.

The proposal emerged after Italian-born U.S. envoy Paolo Zampolli told the Financial Times he had suggested to U.S. President Donald Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino that Italy should step in if Iran withdraws. He argued that Italy’s four World Cup titles justified its inclusion.

However, Abodi rejected the notion outright. “Italy’s possible re-qualification for the 2026 World Cup is, firstly, not possible and, secondly, not appropriate,” he told Sky Sports, stressing that qualification must be earned on the pitch.

Italy failed to qualify after a play-off defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina, marking another absence from the global showpiece.

Despite geopolitical tensions surrounding Iran, Infantino has maintained that the Asian nation will participate, insisting its place is secure. Iran are scheduled to play their Group G matches in the United States.

The controversy has intensified debate over political influence in football, but Italy’s stance makes clear that they will not seek a return based on sporting merit.
