Arsene Wenger has expressed confidence that Arsenal will win the Premier League title this season, despite their recent 2-1 defeat to Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s side closed the gap to three points with a game in hand following their victory at the Etihad Stadium and could move above the Gunners on goal difference with a win over Burnley in midweek.

The result has intensified doubts over Arsenal’s ability to see out the Premier League title race, particularly given their recent history of near-misses, having finished second in each of the past three seasons.

However, Wenger, who guided Arsenal to their last league title in 2004, believes his former club still have the edge and expects City to drop points in the run-in.

“I believe that Arsenal will win the Premier League,” Wenger said at a Project Twinning event. “I deeply believe it. It looks, to me, like common sense. I like the attacking intent we saw with players like Eze, Odegaard, Havertz and Madueke. Manchester City will not make a perfect run-in.”

Arsenal arguably have a more favourable fixture list, with games against Newcastle, Fulham, West Ham, Burnley and Crystal Palace remaining.

City, meanwhile, still face potentially tricky encounters against Everton, Bournemouth and Aston Villa as the title race enters its decisive phase.
