Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, has called on Nigerians to pray for their political leaders, saying those in power bear primary responsibility for the country’s problems.
Obi spoke on Sunday at a thanksgiving service marking Oyo State’s 50th anniversary, held at the Cathedral of St. Peter Anglican Church.
“I want to make a request from Nigerians. Do remember us politicians in your prayers. We are the problem of Nigeria, no other person,” Obi said.
“Nigeria is not a poor country; it is poorly governed. Remember us in your prayers that God should touch our hearts to use public money for public good.”
In a post on X after the service, Obi thanked Seyi Makinde for inviting him to speak. He recalled that at the start of Makinde’s administration, he had addressed the governor’s first executive council retreat, where discussions focused on governance and leadership.

Obi said Makinde had remained consistent in that approach, adding that beyond visible infrastructure projects, the governor’s performance was widely discussed and appreciated by residents of the state.
He also praised Makinde’s remarks at the service on the importance of building strong institutions rather than relying on individuals. According to Obi, the emphasis on continuity and systems offered reassurance that progress in Oyo State would endure beyond a single administration.
The former Anambra governor further thanked Williams Aladekugbe for what he described as a timely sermon, noting that thanksgiving should be seen as a moral discipline that promotes humility, responsibility and service to the common good.
Obi urged residents to continue supporting the state government and to pray that leaders would be guided to act in the best interests of the people.
