…wants ADC presidential ticket zoned to South
A group, Peter Obi Our President (PETOOP), has called for the immediate resignation of Joash Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), citing alleged partisanship and a growing loss of public confidence in the electoral body
Magnus Oraka, National Converner of the group who stated this at a press conference on Saturday in Jos, on behalf of the group said recent actions attributed to INEC raise serious concerns about its neutrality, warning that any electoral umpire perceived to favour a political party cannot be trusted to conduct free, fair, and credible elections in Nigeria.
“We demand the immediate resignation of the INEC Chairman in the interest of electoral integrity,” the group said.
“If he refuses, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must demonstrate leadership by taking decisive action. If the executive fails, the National Assembly must exercise its constitutional authority to protect Nigeria’s democracy,” they added.
PETOOP alleged that INEC has interfered in the internal affairs of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stressing that such actions go beyond the commission’s constitutional mandate of regulation and supervision.
According to the group, when an electoral body begins to influence internal party leadership or disputes, it undermines the entire democratic process and erodes trust among citizens.
PETOOP maintained that a compromised electoral umpire cannot guarantee transparency, fairness, or accountability in the electoral system, insisting that Nigeria’s democracy must be protected above individual interests while PETOP continues to mobilise for accountability.
On the 2027 elections, they also advised the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to zone its presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria, warning that presenting a northern candidate would split opposition votes and weaken chances against the ruling party.
They argued that with the All Progressives Congress (APC) consolidating its northern base, zoning the ticket to the South would promote equity, strengthen opposition unity, and prevent what he described as an avoidable electoral disadvantage.
