Nasiru Gawuna, former deputy governor of Kano State and the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in the state’s 2023 election, has resigned from the party, citing a personal and voluntary decision to leave.

In a resignation letter dated 29th March 2026 and addressed to the APC chairman in Gawuna ward, Nassarawa LGA, he formally ended his membership with immediate effect. He thanked the party for the opportunities he had during his time as a member but gave no indication of his next political move.

The resignation from the APC follows a separate letter, dated 27th March, in which Gawuna stepped down as chairman of the board of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria — a move he said was in compliance with President Bola Tinubu’s directive requiring political appointees to resign before pursuing elective office.

The timing of both exits has fuelled speculation about his next steps. Sources close to the former deputy governor said he is expected to meet Rabiu Kwankwaso — who officially joined the African Democratic Congress on Monday — at the latter’s residence on Miller Road the same evening. Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano and the New Nigeria Peoples Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, remains one of the state’s most influential political figures.
