Abba Kabir Yusuf, the governor of Kano State, has accepted the resignation of the Commissioner for Water Resources, Umar Haruna Doguwa, amid growing political speculation that he may be positioning for the state chairmanship of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Doguwa’s resignation, which takes effect from Tuesday, was confirmed in a statement issued by the Director-General of Media and Publicity at the Kano State Government House, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa. According to the statement, he formally submitted his resignation on Monday.

While the official communication did not state reasons for his decision, political observers link the development to mounting speculation that Doguwa is likely to emerge as the next APC state chairman in Kano.

Doguwa is no stranger to party leadership, having previously served as state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano before his political realignments in recent years.

Governor Yusuf, in the statement, commended Doguwa for what he described as his commitment, loyalty and dedicated service to the people of the state.
Before his redeployment to the Ministry of Water Resources, Doguwa served as Commissioner for Education, where he played a key role in the administration’s declaration of a state of emergency in the education sector and the rollout of reform initiatives.

The governor also acknowledged milestones recorded under Doguwa’s leadership at the Water Resources Ministry, particularly the rehabilitation of water facilities and expansion of potable water supply to several communities.

Describing him as a disciplined and hardworking public servant, Yusuf said Doguwa’s contributions would remain part of the administration’s achievements.
Following the resignation, the governor directed the Commissioner for Education, Ali Haruna Abubakar Makoda, to supervise the Ministry of Water Resources pending the appointment or redeployment of a substantive commissioner.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustaining improvements in water supply and overall service delivery across Kano State, even as political calculations ahead of party congresses continue to reshape the state’s political landscape.
