The national leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed the purported suspension of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, describing it as invalid and of no consequence.
The party said the group behind the announcement lacks the constitutional authority to take such action, insisting that the claims carry no weight within its structures.
In an interview, Bolaji Abdullahi,
the party’s National Publicity Secretary said, “There’s nothing to it. It doesn’t make sense. Those making the claim do not have the power to suspend anyone. They are merely jesters.”
The reaction followed a press briefing in Adamawa State by a factional chairman, Raji Zumo, who announced the suspension of Atiku, Lawal, and the party’s transition committee chairman, Sadiq Ibrahim.
Zumo had accused the trio of promoting disunity, creating parallel party structures, undermining lawful authority, and disregarding a subsisting court order.
He maintained that no member, regardless of status, is above the party’s constitution, stressing that the action was taken to restore discipline and protect the integrity of the party.
However, the national leadership of the ADC has distanced itself from the move, reinforcing that only duly recognised party organs have the authority to initiate disciplinary proceedings.
