Abuja grounded as APC convention kicks off

Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city, was brought to a standstill on Friday following the commencement of the All Progressives Congress (APC) national convention.

Vehicular movement across the city was severely disrupted, with a noticeable absence of traffic officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) at key junctions.

At several traffic light points, gridlock built up as motorists struggled to navigate congested roads, often disregarding traffic rules.

A tour of major parts of the city by our correspondent revealed unprecedented traffic congestion in areas such as Wuse, Maitama, Garki, Gudu District, the Central Business District, Jabi, and Asokoro, among others.

Hotels across the capital were also fully booked, as delegates and party stakeholders flooded the city. Major hospitality centres, including Transcorp Hilton, Abuja Continental, Nicon Luxury Hotel, Chida International Hotel, Fraser Suites, Hawthorn Suites, Bolton White Hotel, and 3Js Hotel, recorded near or full occupancy.

BusinessDay reports that a combined team of heavily armed security operatives, including personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the military were strategically deployed, mounting barricades and restricting access to key entry points.

The strong security presence created a controlled environment aimed at ensuring order and safety for the high-profile political gathering.

Major access roads leading to and around the Federal Secretariat Complex, Phases I, II, and III, were closed, causing significant disruptions to traffic within the city centre.

As a result, many convention participants and delegates were forced to trek considerable distances to reach Eagles Square, with roadblocks positioned several hundred metres away from the venue.

BusinessDay reports that the restrictions also disrupted daily activities, with commuters and residents compelled to seek alternative routes. Security checkpoints were mounted at strategic locations, where thorough checks were conducted on individuals and vehicles approaching the vicinity.

Ahead of the event, the federal government issued a circular directing civil servants working within the federal secretariat to work from home during the convention period.

The APC national convention, which attracted thousands of delegates, party leaders, and stakeholders from across the country, is scheduled to run through Saturday.

Authorities have assured residents that the measures are temporary and necessary to ensure public safety and the smooth conduct of the event.
