The World Humanity Commission (WHC) has announced the appointment of Ambassador Richy Onolememen as High Commissioner for Africa and Special Representative of the Commission in Nigeria after a structured selection process.
The appointment followed a panel review held at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, where Onolememen presented his case before a selection panel made up of Commission officials, policy specialists, and the Special Envoy to the Presidency of the World Humanity Commission.
According to the Commission, the panel review formed part of its leadership selection process, which is based on merit and accountability. Onolememen defended his application and outlined his plans for the role, focusing on Africa’s place in global humanitarian discussions, cooperation among African states, and the Commission’s work in Nigeria.
During the session, Onolememen spoke on development, partnerships with institutions, humanitarian coordination, and the need to align programmes with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He also addressed the importance of placing people at the centre of policy and action.
Speaking on the appointment, the Special Envoy to the Presidency of the World Humanity Commission, Ambassador Chioma Lynda Onwuka, said the position attracted applications from different parts of Africa. She explained that the Supreme Council reviewed all submissions and selected Onolememen based on alignment with the Commission’s direction and mandate.
Ambassador Onwuka said the decision to combine the roles of High Commissioner for Africa and Special Representative in Nigeria reflects the Commission’s intention to strengthen Africa’s participation in global humanitarian processes and deepen engagement within Nigeria.
As High Commissioner for Africa, Onolememen will guide the Commission’s work across the continent, including policy, advocacy, and development programmes. In his role as Special Representative in Nigeria, he will engage with government bodies, diplomatic missions, civil society groups, and development partners.
The World Humanity Commission, which holds consultative status with the United Nations, said the appointment reflects its commitment to leadership standards and responsible governance as it works to promote peace, dignity, and development.
The Commission concluded by restating its guiding principle: “In whatever we do; Humanity Comes First.”
