The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano Strategic Command, has arrested a 45-year-old suspected drug smuggler, Ashiru Bala, with 1,499 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup in Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State.

Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, Assistant Superintendent of Narcotics and Public Relations Officer of the command, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday in Kano.
According to him, the suspect was apprehended at his residence in Lambu village on February 25, 2026, following an intelligence-led operation by NDLEA operatives.

Maigatari said Bala was intercepted after allegedly transporting the large consignment of cough syrup containing codeine from Abuja to Kano.

He added that investigations revealed the illicit drugs were meant for delivery to a local dealer for illegal distribution and consumption, and were part of supplies stockpiled ahead of the forthcoming Sallah celebrations.

The spokesperson said the suspect confessed to transporting such consignments for about two years, adding that he had also been working in township services in Abuja for the past four years.

According to the statement, Bala admitted receiving substantial payments for each delivery, indicating that he was fully aware of the illegal nature of the trade.
Reacting to the development, DY Lawal, the Kano Strategic Commander of NDLEA, said the arrest underscores the agency’s determination to safeguard communities from the dangers of illicit drugs.

He noted that intelligence-driven operations remain central to the agency’s enforcement strategy, particularly during festive periods when demand for controlled substances often rises.

Lawal further stated that the command would continue to intensify its crackdown on drug trafficking networks and ensure offenders are prosecuted.

The arrest, the statement added, forms part of the ongoing “Operation Ramadan Mubarak,” an initiative launched by the Kano Strategic Command in line with the national campaign for a drug-free society championed by NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd).
