The Lagos State Government has denied any involvement in the reported demolition of a property linked to the brother of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, following public outcry and allegations made by the politician.
In a press statement signed by Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, the state government said neither the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) nor any other agency under its authority carried out the demolition in question.
“We wish to categorically state that the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) or any other arm of the Lagos State Government did not carry out the said demolition,” the statement read.

The clarification comes after Peter Obi alleged that a property owned by his youngest brother’s company in Ikeja was illegally demolished by unidentified persons, and accused authorities of complicity and lawlessness.
Reacting, the government said it was “disturbing” that Obi made such serious allegations without verifying the facts.
“We find it disturbing that Mr. Peter Obi would make such allegations without verifying the facts,” the statement added.
To establish the truth and prevent further misinformation, the Lagos government said it has directed a full investigation into the incident.
“We have directed the Permanent Secretary, Office of Urban Development, Arc. Gbolahan Owodunni Oki, FNIA, to request a full investigation by the Lagos State Building Control Agency into this matter,” it said. “This investigation will help clarify the circumstances surrounding the demolition and ensure that any necessary actions are taken.”
The statement also quoted Dr. Olajide Abiodun Babatunde, Special Adviser to the Governor on eGIS and Urban Development—who supervises LASBCA—as confirming that the agency was not involved in any demolition related to Obi’s claims.
Reaffirming its commitment to the rule of law, the state government vowed to act against any acts of illegality, regardless of the parties involved.
“The Lagos State Government is committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the safety and security of all residents. We will not tolerate any acts of lawlessness or violations of extant laws,” the statement noted. “Any individual or group found involved in such acts will be brought to justice.”
The government called on members of the public to disregard Obi’s claims, urging residents to remain confident in the state’s commitment to order and due process.
“We will not be swayed by baseless allegations or attempts to discredit our efforts,” Omotoso said. “The Lagos State Government welcomes everyone to live and work in the state, and we assure all residents of our continued commitment to their safety and well-being.”
