The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has granted accreditation to the preclinical programme of Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete.

Nnaemeka Nwakama, the Team Lead and Deputy, Registrar of the MDCN, announced this during the exit briefing of the accreditation exercise held recently at KWASU Business School, Ilorin.

The accreditation team commended the strong synergy and collaboration between Kwara State University, Malete, and the Kwara State University Teaching Hospital.

The team lead noted that medical education is highly capital- and human resource-intensive, urging the institutions to sustain investment to ensure continuous growth and maintain their status as recognised centres of excellence.

According to Saeedat Aliyu, Acting Director, University Relations, Amina Ahmed El-Imam, the Commissioner for Health, conveyed the appreciation of the State Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq. She noted that the outcome of the exercise underscores the critical role of the MDCN in upholding standards and promoting the advancement of medical education in Nigeria.

Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, the Vice-Chancellor of Kwara State University, who is a Professor of Islamic Studies, expressed delight at the successful outcome of the exercise.

He commended the thoroughness of the process and pledged the university’s commitment to addressing all areas identified for improvement.

The accreditation of the preclinical programme enables 300-level students of Medicine and Surgery at KWASU to proceed to the clinical phase after successfully completing their first professional examination.
