…As alumni move to verify account for fundraising to rescue victim
Abductors of John Arum, the University of Jos graduate, have released a second video showing him held at gunpoint in Zamfara State.
In the footage, the armed kidnappers issued a direct death threat, warning that Arum will be killed if their demands are not met.
The group, which initially demanded N30 million, has reportedly reduced the ransom to N4 million in a bid to pressure the victim’s family and associates.
Arum was recently kidnapped along the high-risk Jos–Kaduna highway during the attack that has raised fresh security concerns in the region.
UniJos alumni move to verify account for fundraising to rescue victim
Meanwhile Peter Gad, the Global President of the University of Jos Alumni Association has said the association is taking steps to verify the correct account details for a crowdfunding initiative aimed at supporting the family of an abducted alumnus.
Gad, in a telephone interview with BusinessDay on Thursday in Jos explained that he is currently on his way to visit the family of the kidnapped student in Jos, noting that the engagement is to ensure proper coordination and avoid circulating incorrect account information for donations.
According to him, the visit has three key objectives: to identify with the family, assess the efforts already made in response to the abduction, and confirm a legitimate account number that can be publicly shared for fundraising purposes.
He further clarified that while various alumni chapters may already be making independent contributions, the central association has not yet begun collecting funds at the global level. He stressed that no official account has been released to avoid any form of mismanagement or legality issues.
“We’ve seen several accounts circulating, and we refuse to share any on our platform until we are certain. We don’t want to support anything that is not properly verified,” Gad stated, adding that once due diligence is completed, the verified account details will be circulated for coordinated support.
Meanwhile, police authorities in the affected states have yet to react to the incident or provide any update on ongoing rescue efforts to secure the release of the victim.
