Fresh anxieties regarding Nigeria’s intelligence capabilities and security framework have surfaced following a tragic massacre in Jos North Local Government Area. Despite early warnings originating from neighbouring regions in Plateau State, the assault claimed at least 28 lives, with the death toll expected to rise as more information emerges.
Only days before this tragedy, inhabitants of the Irigwe Chiefdom in Bassa Local Government Area issued urgent alerts regarding potential coordinated strikes on several villages timed to coincide with Easter celebrations and the Zrrechi festival. Residents specifically identified Zarwa, Tafigana, Kpachudu, and Kpasho as vulnerable targets after spotting hundreds of armed individuals on motorcycles advancing toward Mararaban Dare.

A local youth leader, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed that these threats were formally reported to security agencies well in advance of the violence. The perceived lack of a proactive official response forced these communities to rely on self-preservation. In an effort to safeguard residents, local vigilante groups were mobilised to conduct intensive night surveillance and enforce restrictions on non-essential movement across the threatened areas.
However, the anticipated attacks did not occur in the rural communities. Instead, violence erupted in Jos North, a metropolitan hub, underscoring critical gaps in intelligence coordination and response.
On the night of Palm Sunday, gunmen attacked Gari Ya Waye community in Angwan Rukuba, killing nearly 30 people in the area, while several others were injured.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers operated for several minutes, firing indiscriminately and moving through parts of the community unchallenged before escaping. Families were left struggling to identify victims as chaos unfolded.
Police intensify operations to apprehend attackers, restore calm immediately
The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the attack on Monday and extended condolences to the victims’ families. In a statement signed by Alfred Alabo, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), the command said:
“Our officers, including members of the Command’s Management Team, PMF Squadron Commanders, DPOs, and Tactical Team Commanders, are fully deployed to the area to ensure law and order is maintained. Joint operations involving all security agencies are ongoing to apprehend the suspects.”
The statement added that Bassey Ewah, the Commissioner of Police, personally led a team to the scene to reduce tension and restore calm. The command affirmed that investigations are ongoing to bring all perpetrators to justice.

Government imposes 48 hours curfew
In response, the Plateau State Government imposed a 48-hour curfew on Jos North Local Government Area. The directive was contained in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, which read:
“The Plateau State Government, in conjunction with security agencies, wishes to inform the general public of the imposition of a 48-hour curfew within Jos North Local Government Area with immediate effect, commencing from 12 midnight of 29th March to 1st April, 2026.”
“The government under the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang strongly condemns this barbaric and unprovoked attack on innocent citizens and assures the public that all necessary measures are being taken to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.”
The government also urged residents to remain calm, stay vigilant, and cooperate fully with security agencies by providing useful information to aid ongoing investigations.
Mutfwang visits scene, vows justice for victims
Meanwhile, after the official statement, Caleb Mutfwang, the governor, visited the scene of the heinous attack, where he commiserated with the bereaved families and vowed to ensure that the perpetrators of the evil act are brought to justice.
During the visit, the Governor announced plans for a befitting burial for the deceased and assured that the Plateau State Government will take full responsibility for the medical bills of those injured and currently receiving treatment in various hospitals.
Governor Mutfwang also appealed to citizens—particularly traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community stakeholders—to join hands with the Government in addressing the prevailing security challenges in the state.
He reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to restoring peace, strengthening security, and fostering unity across Plateau State.
BusinessDay reports that security agencies continued recovery efforts and have intensified measures to restore calm in the area.
The fact that the latest attack occurred in a metropolitan local government—rather than in the rural communities —has further deepened concerns, suggesting that threats may be shifting while security responses remain static.
Residents fear violence could escalate across city, and beyond
Fears are also mounting that the violence could spread beyond the immediate scene of the attack to other metropolitan areas within Jos and even extend to the surrounding local government areas if urgent steps are not taken.
Many residents worry that the pattern of attacks in the state often follows a chain reaction, particularly when swift and decisive security measures are not deployed to contain the situation early.

“In Jos, when this kind of thing starts, it doesn’t usually end in one place. There is always the fear that it will spread across other parts of the city and even beyond, except security forces come in aggressively and take control of the situation immediately,” one resident said
Similarly, Jacob Musa, a resident of Dandin Kowa, expressed concern that the latest attack could trigger wider unrest if not properly contained. “We have seen this pattern before. Once an occurrence like this happens, it can easily escalate to other areas. That is why people are already afraid. The security agencies need to act fast and decisively to prevent it from spreading,” he said.
The incident underscores a troubling shift in attack patterns and exposes lapses in intelligence coordination and rapid response, reinforcing the need for a more dynamic and preventive security architecture to effectively counter emerging threats.
