As part of efforts geared towards the reduction of the 28 million housing deficit in Nigeria, the Low-Cost Housing Developers Association (LCHDA) has launched the Artisans Development and Support Program (ADSP).

Emmanuel Excel Ogbeide, the founder/president of the organisation disclosed in a statement made available to BusinessDay in Benin City.

Ogbeide said that the organisation is not only building a foundation of skilled, empowered, but also recognised professionals.

He said the organisation had in the past sponsored about 20 artisans under the Furniture Association to Sweden and Latvia for training.

He also added that the beneficiaries were empowered financially to procure modern-day equipment.

The LCHDA president opined that with the initiative, the organisation has heralded a new era of collaboration and empowerment in Nigeria’s affordable housing value chain.

According to him, the initiative was designed to formalise, professionalise, and uplift the very individuals who turn blueprints into homes, ensuring that the push for affordable housing is inclusive and sustainable.

“The LCHDA’s initiative directly empowers the hands that build our nation, from bricklayers, carpenters, and electricians to plumbers, tilers, and solar and security installation experts.

“Others include Welders, painters, interior decorators, Aluminium/POP installers and roofing experts.

“One of the programme’s primary goals is to enhance the skills and credibility of its members and participants.

“Through free and subsidised training, artisans can access workshops on modern construction techniques, safety standards, and sustainable building practices.

“The dream of affordable housing for every Nigerian family cannot be realised without a skilled, certified, and empowered workforce. Our artisans are the true heroes of our industry.

“This programme is not just an investment in their skills; it is an investment in the very quality, safety, and affordability of the homes we build. This is a partnership for national development.”

Ogbeide posited that the initiative is a comprehensive, membership-based program offering a suite of exclusive benefits designed to elevate the professional standing and economic potential of artisans and groups across the nation.

He further added that the programme would facilitate access to Government-Accredited Certifications from relevant bodies, which boosts employability and professional standing.

“Specialised courses will also be offered in areas like green building, solar installation, and smart home wiring, equipping artisans for the future of construction, amongst others.

“The programme also supports artisans in forming cooperatives and joint ventures, enabling them to bid on larger, more lucrative government and private sector contracts.

“Members will have access to free and subsidised workshops on modern construction techniques, safety standards, and sustainable practices. Certified artisans will receive priority access to employment and tender opportunities on LCHDA-affiliated housing projects nationwide.

“Access to low-interest loans, grants, and equipment leasing schemes will be provided to help artisans acquire modern tools and scale their businesses, removing a significant barrier to growth.”

He emphasised that the partnership is a testament to LCHDA’s belief that the path to solving Nigeria’s housing deficit is paved with collaboration, respect, and a shared commitment to building a better future for all.
