Not fewer than four soldiers have been killed, and unspecified numbers were injured when the fighters of the Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) invaded the military base in the southern part of Borno state on Sunday.
Business Day learnt that ISWAP terrorists launched multiple coordinated attacks in Gwoza, Biu and Hawul, all local government areas in the southern part of the state.
According to sources, the outlawed groups attack troops’ locations in Mandra-Girau town with rockets, propelled grenades, and anti-tank guns.
The source added that four soldiers lost their lives and the base was partially destroyed.
“At least four soldiers lost their lives, and others were wounded, an operational vehicle was destroyed, and the terrorists partially touched down the formation.” Source disclosed.
Meanwhile, the Boko Haram terrorists attacked and burnt houses in Debiro village, Kwajaffa/ Harang Ward of Hawul Council, all in Southern Borno Senatorial District.
Some parts of Debiro inhabitants also share a local border with the Biu local government area, which had witnessed a series of terrorist attacks and killings in the past.
Sources revealed that the Debiro latest onslaught on Sunday evening led to the destruction and setting ablaze of residential houses, a vehicle, looting of foodstuff and livestock, with scores of people who fled from their homes into the bush for safety.
Dogo M Shettima, a resident of the community, announced this via his Meta timelines on Sunday evening.
“Boko Haram attacked and burnt houses in Debiro village in Kwajaffa Harang ward of Hawul LGA this evening, one vehicle and properties also burnt down completely as at the information received from my community right now.”
Simultaneously, suspected members of ISWAP terrorists launched a coordinated attack on a Military Base and some residential locations in Pulka Community of Gwoza local government area, which were all repelled by troops of Joint Task Force North East Operation Hadin Kai.
In a statement issued by Sani Uba, Lieutenant Colonel Media Information Officer, Joint Task Force North East Operation Hadin Kai, to Journalists on Monday, confirmed that troops repelled an attempt to attack its base at Pulka, Mad in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.
He regretted that some soldiers and civilians jtf paid the supreme price in the multiple attacks in the southern part of the state.
“Also, on the same night, a large group of suspected BHT/ ISWAP terrorists advanced from the Sambisa Forest axis and launched a fierce attack on troops of Sector 1 in Pulka. In a well-coordinated response, troops engaged the terrorists in an intense firefight, successfully containing and reversing the assault.
“Although a section of the perimeter was briefly breached, leading to the destruction of some combat enablers and accommodation. Impressively, swift reinforcement with overwhelming firepower from 26 Brigade forced the terrorists to retreat in disarray towards the Sambisa axis.
“Credible intelligence indicates that the terrorists suffered severe casualties, including a senior commander identified as Abou Aisha, who sustained a critical gunshot injury to the neck, leading to his death, alongside significant losses of weapons and equipment. There was no single human casualty among the troops during the attack on Pulka.
“In a related development, troops of Sector 2 at Mandaragirau came under a coordinated multi-pronged attack by ISWAP terrorists mounted on gun trucks and motorcycles. Anticipating such action, troops had tactically emplaced combat teams that decisively engaged the terrorists. Interestingly, the attack was successfully thwarted after a fierce exchange, without breaching the location’s defences.
” Regrettably, some gallant personnel and Civilian Joint Task Force members paid the supreme price in the defence of their location, while a few soldiers sustained injuries and were immediately evacuated by the Air Component of OPHK and the Nigerian Army Aviation platforms. Their sacrifice embodies the highest traditions of service, courage, and commitment to the defence of Nigeria.”Uba noted.
