The Nigerian Institution of Marine Engineers and Naval Architects (NIMENA) has established two peer-reviewed academic journals aimed at strengthening research, innovation and policy development within Africa’s maritime and marine engineering sectors.
The new publications, the African Journal of Offshore, Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture (AJOMENA) and the Journal of the Blue Economy & Sustainable Energy Development, are designed to provide scholarly platforms that promote indigenous research and deepen collaboration among academics, industry practitioners and policymakers working in the maritime domain.
NIMENA said the initiative represents a significant step in its long-term strategy to expand Africa’s maritime knowledge base and increase the continent’s contribution to global research in marine engineering and naval architecture.
According to the institution, the African Journal of Offshore, Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture will focus on specialised technical fields including offshore engineering, marine engineering systems, naval architecture and maritime technology development.
“The journal will publish peer-reviewed studies that address engineering challenges in offshore energy operations, vessel design and marine infrastructure across Africa’s coastal and inland water environments.
“The second publication, the Journal of the Blue Economy & Sustainable Energy Development, will focus on emerging policy and development issues within the maritime sector.
“Areas of coverage include blue economy policy frameworks, maritime innovation, sustainable energy systems, ocean resource management and strategies for developing Africa’s ocean economy”, it stated.
NIMENA noted that both journals are intended to strengthen indigenous research capacity while facilitating knowledge exchange between researchers, marine engineers, policymakers and private sector stakeholders across Africa and beyond.
The institution said the journals will also serve as credible academic outlets for professionals and scholars seeking to publish research findings that can support evidence-based decision-making in maritime governance, offshore energy development and marine engineering practice.
The official launch of the two journals is scheduled for May 11, 2026, at the headquarters of the Nigerian Society of Engineers in Abuja.
Eferebo Sylvanus, NIMENA National Chairman  described the establishment of the journals as a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening policy development, encouraging innovation and supporting Nigeria’s expanding blue economy.
Sylvanus said the publications would provide a structured academic platform for marine engineers, researchers and maritime professionals to contribute to the body of knowledge guiding sustainable maritime development in Africa.
He added that the initiative aligns with broader efforts to promote research-driven solutions capable of addressing emerging challenges in offshore engineering, maritime infrastructure development and ocean resource management.
