Simon Okeke, former Chairman of the Police Service Commission, has appealed to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to support Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election, framing the move as a pathway to national unity and historic closure.
In a strongly worded letter, Okeke argued that Obi enjoys unmatched nationwide acceptance, describing his candidacy as a unique opportunity to bridge Nigeria’s long-standing divisions.
While acknowledging imperfections, the former chairman maintained that Obi stands out among current contenders in terms of cross-regional appeal.

He also referenced Atiku’s past electoral strength in the South-East, noting that the region had consistently backed his presidential bids, particularly in 2023, and that the 2027 race presents an opportunity for reciprocity.
Okeke urged Atiku to step aside in favour of Obi, aligning with what he described as the unwritten principle of rotational balance, which favours the South completing its tenure in office. He warned that failure to do so could damage perceptions of Atiku’s long-standing relationship with the South-East.
Extending his appeal beyond party lines, Okeke called on leaders and voters in the North and South-West to view Obi’s candidacy as a national project rather than a regional ambition.
