A high court in Adamawa State has ordered the suspension of congresses planned by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) across the state, pending the determination of a suit challenging the process.
The affected congresses, scheduled to take place at the state, local government, and ward levels, were halted by an order issued by Justice Ahmed Isah of High Court No. 6 in Yola.
The ruling followed a case filed by the ADC’s Adamawa State Chairman, Yohanna Shehu, who is contesting what he described as his exclusion from the planning of the congresses.
Shehu’s suit specifically challenges the role of the party’s state transition committee, led by Sadiq Dasin, which he alleges conducted the exercise without proper consultation.
The court subsequently adjourned the matter to Wednesday, April 15, for further hearing.
Reacting to the development, Shehu maintained that his decision to seek legal redress was driven by concerns over internal democracy within the party.
“How can you plan the congresses of a party without due consultation with the state chairman?” he said during a telephone interview, criticizing the process adopted by the Dasin-led committee as undemocratic.
The court’s intervention effectively puts all planned ADC congress activities in Adamawa State on hold until the dispute is resolved.
