…Akinola Davies Jr. and Wale Davies Win Outstanding Debut for ‘My Father’s Shadow ‘
British-Nigerian filmmaker Akinola Davies Jr. and his brother Wale Davies claimed the Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer award at the 2026 EE BAFTA Film Awards for their poignant drama ‘My Father’s Shadow’.
The film, which follows two brothers navigating life in 1993 Lagos amid Nigeria’s election crisis, beat out nominees including Pillion, The Ceremony, Wasteman, and A Want In Her.
In an emotional acceptance speech, Akinola Davies Jr. dedicated the win to immigrant parents and his late father, urging the audience to preserve family stories and memories.
The victory marks a historic moment for African storytelling on the global stage, as ‘My Father’s Shadow’, shot across Nigeria and the UK, highlights themes of family, identity, and memory through the lens of a debut feature.
Nigerian-British actress Wunmi Mosaku also triumphed, taking home Best Supporting Actress for her powerful performance in Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’. Mosaku’s win contributed to the film’s three BAFTAs on the night, alongside Original Screenplay for Coogler and Original Score.
Dominating the ceremony, Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another secured six awards, including Best Film, Best Director for Anderson, Adapted Screenplay, Supporting Actor (Sean Penn), Cinematography, and Editing. Other notable wins included Hamnet earning Outstanding British Film and Leading Actress for Jessie Buckley, underscoring a diverse and celebrated lineup at this year’s BAFTAs.
