The Vice Chancellor of the Kwara State University, Abdulrasheed Na’Allah, says the spirit of volunteerism is critical to the services and development of the nation.
Na’Allah stated this while presenting Scholarship Award organised by the University’s Alumni Association to ten outstanding selected students across all the departments of the Institution.
The Vice Chancellor, who explained that understanding the values of selfless services, volunteerism and patriotism would build a virile society in Nigeria, commended the Alumni Association of the Institution for considering the spirit of volunteerism in the selection of the beneficiaries. Just as he charged the students of the University to always render selfless services to the University and humanity.
Volunteerism according to him allows the students to garner experience across all the fields of profession and pave way for them to easily gain employment in the future.
Earlier, Damilare Peter Oyimloye, the President of the Kwara State University Alumni Association, described the Scholarship Award as the most consistent scholarship programme in the University since its establishment.
Oyinloye noted that despite the economic quagmire confronting the country, students were supported through the Scholarship award for part of their tuition fees and educational endowment support services towards facilitating learning and selfless services in the institution.
The President of the Alumni Association said the beneficiaries of the award were selected having been found worthy in learning and character.Meanwhile, the State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed says the State Infrastructure Development Fund (IF-K) has strengthened the capacity of the government to meet its obligations despite the current economic challenges.
The Governor made this known while flagging off the construction of the School of Environmental Sciences of the Kwara State University at Osi in Ekiti local government area of the state.
He noted that with the development fund, his administration has made good on its commitment to initiate and complete new and on-going infrastructure projects such as the Geri Alimi Diamond Underpass and a new campus for the Kwara State University at Ilesha Baruba.
The governor stressed that the three-campus model for Kwara State University (KWASU) as enshrined in its blueprint underlines the government’s determination to expand access to quality higher education while providing cutting edge skills and research for industry.
He also noted that in keeping with current local realities and global trends, the three campuses of KWASU are designed to run on a sustainable platform.
Ahmed further explained that the Ekiti campus will groom scientists and thinkers that will proffer practical solutions to the various problems that plague the country.
Saying, the siting of the project will accelerate the socio-economic development of Ekiti Local Government and the state in general.
The Governor revealed that four hundred mass housing units will be constructed in Osi by the African Nations Development Programme (ANDP) under its partnership with the state government.
He said this will not only boost the local economy and create jobs in the formal and informal sector, but will also attract other investments to the area thereby creating more opportunities for Kwarans.
Earlier in her address, Amina Ahmed, the State’s Commissioner for Tertiary Education, disclosed that the project was awarded at a contract sum of N1.583b and is expected to be completed in 52 weeks.
She commended Governor Ahmed for his efforts and vision to make KWASU a leading institution in research and academics.
