… Holds annual media parley with journalists

Folasade Ogunsola, vice-chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), has called for stronger collaboration between the media and universities, stressing that such synergy is critical to promoting national development and informed public discourse.

Speaking at a media parley organised by the management of the university for journalists on Monday, Ogunsola said, “All of us have a business of nation building from different aspects.”

The vice-chancellor emphasised that both the media industry and the university communities view things from different perspectives, and are faced with different challenges in the course of nation building business.

“Together we can share with the population what’s going on, and we can elevate our educational system. One thing I do know for sure is that we all want things to get better,” she said.

The first female vice-chancellor at UNILAG pointed out that the institution is going through a lot of changes, which according to her can sometimes be messy.

Hence, she urged the media to be constructive in carrying out their duties in nation building by holding the university management accountable.

“When changes and transformation are occurring, it can be messy; some things will go wrong, so that it can get right. We all want change, but nobody wants the mess that goes with change, but there will always be mess.

“So, my prayer is that with you beside us, we will be accountable, and will take our decisions more judiciously and more intentionally,” she said.

She appreciated the media for the cooperation and fairness which the university has enjoyed all through the year courtesy of their reportage.

“You’ve held us accountable, told us where we erred and praised us where we have done well,” she noted.

Mojeed Alabi, chairman of the Education Writers Association of Nigeria (EWAN) on behalf of the association and the media team stated that the indispensability of collaboration and partnership between the media and the tertiary institutions’ managements.

Alabi noted the unnerving challenges faced by tertiary education in Nigeria, however, he applauded the management of UNILAG for upholding the excellence disposition despite the odds.

Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, head of the communication unit at UNILAG expressed her appreciation to the media team and the university management for taking out time to honour the invitation.

“I really appreciate all of you for coming despite it being a busy working   day.  We’re very thankful that you are here and we are very excited about the interactions,” she said.
