Kano State government has constructed and commissioned new office complexes worth millions of naira for the promotion and discipline division as well as the Junior Secondary Schools department, at the state Secondary Schools Management Board headquarters, in the state capital.
Equally, the government purchased and distributed assorted kitchen utensils to its 52 boarding secondary schools and flagged off the use of newly revised 9-year Basic Education Curriculum, received by the state Ministry of Education from the National Education Research and Development Council.
Performing the functions, the state acting governor, Hafiz Abubakar said the move is part of moves to improve education infrastructure and facilities for better learning outcomes in the state.
“Government will continue to be steadfast in the provision of all the necessary educational infrastructures, such as the provision of instructional and learning materials, construction of additional classrooms, offices, laboratories and libraries as well as maintaining the existing ones,” he stressed.
Abubakar said the present administration in the state has taken far-reaching measures to improve the delivery of quality service in the education sector, especially learning outcomes in secondary schools, saying the move is yielding positive results.
He pointed out that the introduction of Grade-A schools and upgrading of their Principals to Grade level 16 in the civil service structure was meant to ensure effective delivery by the teachers and principals in secondary schools across the State.
“Already the first batch of 13 Schools and their Principals have been approved by His Excellency, the governor, while we have continued processing the next batch, in addition to the upgrade of 14 zonal education officers to the position of substantive directors” he stated.
The Acting governor, who is also the state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, revealed that within the span of two years, the State government had twice reviewed the cost of feeding boarding students, which has been doubled now as against the rate met in the year 2015.
“We have also included chicken, eggs, fresh milk and fresh fruits to their weekly menu all in our effort to ensure the required balance diet is directly linked to better concentration, understanding and overall achievements of educational objectives” he added.
Abubakar then urged agencies and parastatals under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to utilize funds they generate for developmental initiatives, towards making Kano great.
Earlier, the Executive Secretary Kano State Secondary Schools Management Board, Hussaini Umar Ganduje maintained that within the past two years, the board has recorded tremendous progress in several areas including provision of infrastructure.
“We have succeeded in getting full financial support from the State Government and renovated over 47 Secondary Schools as well as initiated programmes on discipline, welfare and promotion among the teachers and their students”, he pointed out.
Ganduje said the board has succeeded in settling the Contractors that supplied food to boarding Schools their over 14 weeks outstanding payment, due to the financial support it enjoys from the government.
