In a bid to build the spirit of enterprise among female students in senior secondary schools, The Girls Enterprise Programme (GEP) a part of Junior Achievement Nigeria’s Leadership Empowerment Achievement and Development (LEAD) have concluded the camp where female students were recruited and trained on different aspects of setting up and running a business.

The girls taught approach of writing business plans, selling shares to raise capital, electing officers, managing a business and financial records as well as returning profits to shareholders as dividends.

The programme saw a steady rise in applicants as the girls learn skill such as jewelry making, hairdressing, beauty application techniques and food preparation. GEP trained over Four Hundred and Fifty Five (455) girls in jewelry making, make-up application, food preparation, photography & video production and also provided computer skills training.

For over a decade, MasterCard has partnered with Junior Achievement to provide financial empowerment education to young people across the world. MasterCard’s partnership with Junior Achievement began with the Junior Achievement—Young Enterprise programme which stresses entrepreneurial thinking among youth as well as featuring entrepreneurial opportunities for them.

Speaking on their experiences, Lawal Yahaya (Make up Class) said that carrying out a successful business as a makeup artist is not an over-night event.

According to Yahaya “It requires Time, focus, dedication to developing the right set of skills; a steady client base are required to develop in this challenging profession. Successful makeup artists are expected to work in all kinds of environments”

Aishat Mahmud (Computer Application) commended Junior Achievement Nigeria for this training. “Before I was selected in this programme I knew nothing about Computers or social media” she said
