The Abia Union in South Africa says it will acquire 1,000 iPads to boost Information Technology (ICT) among schools in the state.

Emmanuel Onwuemenyi, National Secretary of the Union, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on telephone from Johannesburg, South Africa that the gesture was part of the group’s resolutions its national convention.

The convention was held at Durban, Kwazulu-Natal Province of South Africa.

Onwuemenyi said the group planned to get some of the mini-computers through voluntary donations by members, associates and sister organisations resident in South Africa.

“The aim is to make students in our state to be ICT compliant. Our state is blessed with abundant stars and if they are introduced to ICT early, we believe they will go places.

“The first step is to give brilliant students in secondary schools and as time goes on, efforts will be made to extend the donation to other schools.

“We are also working with state government to ensure the successful implementation of this laudable project,’’ he said.

The secretary said that the convention agreed to ensure that good welfare of members was given priority.

“The union will introduce skill acquisition, self empowerment and sustainable growth for members.

“We are determined to ensure that Abia indigenes and Nigerians in South Africa are empowered to become self-employed and creative,’’ he said.

Onwuemenyi said that the union adopted resolutions aimed at strengthening relationships with other Nigerian groups to uphold the nation’s name and integrity in South Africa.
