Nine months ago, over 2,000 pupils from public primary schools across 20 Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs) in Lagos State began a journey that would test not just their academic knowledge, but their resilience, determination, and belief in their own potential.

Today, that journey has produced eight outstanding qualifiers.

The milestone marks the successful completion of Stage Three of the Sweetthinkers Academic Excellence Award Initiative, a non-profit programme committed to fostering academic excellence in government-owned schools while also supporting the improvement of school infrastructure.

Founded on the belief that every child, regardless of background, deserves the opportunity to excel, the Sweetthinkers initiative has steadily grown into a powerful platform that recognizes brilliance and encourages a culture of learning among pupils in public schools.

A Journey of Excellence

The competition began with Stage One, where over 2,000 pupils drawn from public primary schools across the state sat for a standardized paper-based examination within their respective Local Government Education Authorities. Each school was represented by two pupils, creating a broad and inclusive platform for participation.

From this stage, the top 10 pupils from each LGEA advanced, producing 200 outstanding students who moved on to the next phase of the competition.

In Stage Two, these pupils competed within Lagos State’s senatorial districts — Lagos West, Lagos East, and Lagos Central. The stage served as another rigorous test of academic strength, critical thinking, and composure under pressure.

At the end of this round, 40 of the most exceptional pupils emerged, each representing the remarkable talent present within the state’s public school system. To further support their growth, each of the 40 qualifiers were mentored as a way of helping them expand their vision, build confidence and encourage them to dream bigger.

“From the beginning, our goal has been to create a platform that allows children in public schools to be able to compete with their counterparts in private schools. What we are seeing from these pupils is proof that brilliance exists everywhere when the right opportunities are provided.”
— Favour Akinola, Project Manager

Preparing for the Digital Stage

Ahead of Stage Three, the 40 qualifying pupils also participated in a mock Computer-Based Test session, designed to familiarize them with the digital testing environment and ensure that every participant approached the next phase with confidence.

For many of the pupils, it was their first experience with a computer-based examination. The mock session provided an opportunity for them to understand the testing interface, practice navigating the system, and reduce the anxiety often associated with digital assessments.

Beyond preparation, the exercise reflected the initiative’s commitment to creating a level playing field, ensuring that every pupil had the opportunity to perform at their best.

Stage Three: A Digital Test of Excellence

The Stage Three Computer-Based Test, held on March 9, introduced a technology-driven evaluation designed to further test the academic strength and adaptability of the pupils.

For many of the participants, it was also a valuable opportunity to engage with digital testing platforms, reflecting the increasing role of technology in modern education.

Following a rigorous assessment process, eight exceptional pupils emerged as qualifiers, securing their place in the grand finale of the competition.

“Sweetthinkers is not just about competition; it is about inspiring confidence in these young minds and reminding them that their dreams are valid. When we invest in children and education at this level, we are shaping the future of our society.”
— Funmilayo Olaniwun, Convener, Sweetthinkers

A Celebration of Knowledge and Determination

As the initiative approaches its final stage, the eight qualifiers now stand as representatives of thousands of pupils who began the journey months ago.

The Grand Finale, which will take the form of a live, stage-based quiz competition, will bring together students, educators, stakeholders, and members of the public to celebrate the brilliance and determination of young learners from public schools across Lagos State.

Beyond the competition itself, the Sweetthinkers Academic Excellence Award Initiative continues to highlight the importance of nurturing academic talent while improving learning conditions within public schools.

At its core, Sweetthinkers remains committed to its mission of fostering a culture of academic excellence across public schools while supporting improvements in school infrastructure.
