The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has commenced the deployment of a Long-Term Election Observation Mission (LTOEM) to Benin ahead of its presidential election slated for April 12, 2026.
The move, authorised by Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, is part of efforts to support a credible, transparent, and peaceful electoral process in the West African nation.
According to a statement issued by the ECOWAS Commission on Wednesday, the deployment aligns with key regional legal instruments guiding democratic governance and conflict prevention.
These include the 1993 Revised Treaty, the 1999 Mechanism for Conflict Prevention, Management and Resolution, the 2001 Additional Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, and provisions within the 2008 ECOWAS Conflict Prevention Framework.
The Commission disclosed that 15 experts drawn from ECOWAS member states arrived in Benin on March 22 and will remain in the country until April 18, 2026.
“During this period, the observers will be stationed across all regions to closely track developments throughout the electoral cycle.
“The team comprises specialists in constitutional law, political affairs, diplomacy, media, electoral operations, conflict prevention, gender inclusion, and security.
“Their mandate covers monitoring activities before, during, and after the election”, the statement said.
ECOWAS noted that the long-term observers would play a crucial role in identifying early warning signs of potential electoral tensions, providing real-time analysis, and recommending prompt interventions where necessary.
“Their analyses will serve as early warning and rapid response mechanisms to help prevent and manage any conflict linked to the elections,” the Commission stated.
It added that the mission is expected to enhance public confidence in the electoral process by promoting transparency and accountability, while also encouraging higher voter participation.
ECOWAS also plans to deploy a Short-Term Election Observation Mission comprising about 100 observers closer to election day.
To ensure seamless coordination, the Commission said it will establish a situation room to monitor nationwide developments and provide daily updates to its leadership.
