Lagos – the center of excellence and all things entertaining. I used to wonder why every entertainment event always happened in Lagos. But moving to Lagos has opened my eyes to why this densely populated city, which was the nation’s former capital is the bee-hive of every major entertainment and lifestyle event that happens in the country. With a vast array of beaches, luxurious hotels, exotic galleries, nature parks and a rich night life, there are tons of things in Lagos that sets you on a path of becoming a tourist once you are here.
Waka-dugbe is an informal slang for someone who is constantly on the move or hopping from one place to another attending events, seeing new places, visiting and making new acquaintances and everything in between for leisure. If you are naturally introverted and tend to love your television set or laptop screen more than the outdoors, Lagos always has the ability to trump any natural introverted tendencies one may have. And this is a good thing. There are always benefits to exploring your city and meeting new people.
So, if you are not so sure how to make the best out of your desires to tour the city, here are a few tips on how to be a successful waka-dugbe in Lagos and have fun while doing so.
Google is your friend. There are some places I’ve been to in Lagos that I only discovered on the internet or via social media channels. Even if you are part of an introverted clique or have no idea where to start from, the internet is a huge tool you can use to your advantage. Use your search box and find fun locations in Lagos, read reviews about the experience of people who have been to such places and visit social media channels for exciting pictures of all the fun things you can do there.
There is no fun place in Lagos if you go with the wrong people. It is that simple. No matter how lovely and breath-taking a place is, if you do not have the right people to enjoy the moments and scenery with, it will just be another place you’ve been to ticked off you list.
Your adventure is not complete in Lagos without some adrenaline rush. I once went to the Lekki Conservation Center with a friend of mine and despite my fear of heights, I took a walk across the 401 meters canopy walk which was over 25 feet up the forest floor at its topmost height! That’s the scariest thing I’ve ever done! But I loved it – afterwards. From canopy walks to cart races, water skiing and boat rides across the vast water bodies present in Lagos, take some time and do some of the scary stuff.
There’s nothing that bonds better than good food. Make sure your waka takes you somewhere where good food is served. Keep in mind that expensive does not always equal tasty. I’ll choose tasty anytime, really.
Make sure you have a camera to capture all the beautiful scenery and moments of your trip. Pictures still life and capture memories eternally. Make sure you have a great camera or phone to capture the beautiful scenery and fun moments of all your adventures – selfies, groupies and videos. You can share these on your social media platforms, create picture collages or just reminisce about good times when the need arises.
Lastly, never leave your house without backup, especially if you are going somewhere new. Backup could mean your debit card, an extra shirt/dress, a power bank, etc. This ensures that you are never stranded in a new place where you know no one or how to access help.
They say you only live once, right? Make the best out of it while you still can.
Cheers!
