…Commits $10b to Nigeria’s cookstoves initiative

Greenplinth Africa and Allgreen Energy NV, have signed a manufacturing agreement to deliver 24 million clean cookstoves under the 80M Clean Cookstoves project in Nigeria initiative.

Similarly, Allgreen has committed $10 billion to support the manufacturing of the clean cookstoves, and is expected to deliver the first set of the cookstoves in July, 2026.

“Today, we will be signing a Manufacturing Agreement with Allgreen Energy NV for the first 24 million Clean Cookstoves.

“We are also pleased to announce that Allgreen Energy NV and its partners will be supporting the 80M Clean Cookstoves project in Nigeria with an investment of $10 billion within the next 18 months,” Olawale Akinwumi, President & GCEO, Greenplinth Africa, said on Tuesday April 28, during the signing in Lagos.

Accordkng to him, the provision of free clean cookstoves and free briquettes as fuel will impact households, particularly women and children, who are disproportionately affected by the harmful effects of traditional cooking practices.

Akinwumi added that the 80M Clean Cookstoves project is a transformative initiative, and a significant step forward in combatting the adverse health and environmental impacts associated with traditional cooking methods, such as indoor air pollution and deforestation.

“The adoption of clean and efficient cookstoves by households will lead to improved indoor air quality, reduce respiratory illnesses, and largely contribute to mitigating climate change through lower carbon emissions,” he said.

Titilayo Oshodi, Special Adviser (SA) to the Lagos State Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy, said the issue of access to clean cooking in Africa is not only a development concern, but also a defining question of equity, health, climate justice, and economic transformation across the continent.

“In Nigeria alone, over 180 million people are affected by this reality, with women bearing the greatest share of the burden,” she said.

According to Oshosi, the dependence is not only inefficient, but also contributes to indoor air pollution, deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, and lost productive time for households.

Babatunde Aina, the Group Chief Financial Officer, GreenPlinth Africa Limited, said they plan to distribute about one million clean stoves per month.

He added that Greenplinth intend to

complete the validation and registration of the stoves between By October and December.

“So, we have nine months total duration, eight major milestones, and we believe we’ll be 95 percent on track by this time,” Aina said.
