Travellers at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja will soon benefit from a dedicated spiritual and relaxation hub, following the commencement of the Ecumenical Airport Chapel and Pilgrims Centre on Saturday.

George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, described the project as a historic initiative during the groundbreaking ceremony. He noted that the centre reflects a significant intersection of faith, national development, and human well-being, moving beyond mere ceremonial function to integrate spiritual reflection into modern infrastructure.

Enhancing passenger experience through holistic infrastructure

While the project’s total cost remains undisclosed, the facility is designed to serve as a sanctuary for travellers, pilgrims, and the Christian faithful. Akume emphasized that the centre will provide a sacred space for individuals to pause and reconnect with God amidst the demands and uncertainties of travel.

The development aligns with the Federal Government’s broader strategy to upgrade aviation infrastructure and enhance the overall passenger experience. Akume explained that modern airports must cater to the emotional and spiritual needs of transit passengers, reflecting a holistic approach to sector development.

Strengthening national unity and moral values

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation highlighted the timeliness of the initiative, noting that the need for spiritual support systems is critical in an era of increasing mobility and pressure. He described the consecrated haven as a tool for promoting national unity, moral values, and shared humanity.

Akume commended the visionaries and partners behind the project for their dedication, urging continued collaboration to ensure its successful completion. He expressed optimism that the centre would serve future generations, offering comfort and inspiration to all who pass through the airport’s doors.
