The Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM) has condemned the destruction of more than 50 hectares of irrigation farmlands in Jol community, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, describing the incident as deliberate and devastating to local livelihoods.
The association also demanded an immediate halt to grazing activities in Jol and surrounding communities, full compensation for affected farmers, and strengthened security presence, warning that continued inaction could escalate tensions despite its commitment to peaceful resolution.
In a statement signed by Rwang Tengwong, the Publicity Secretary of the group, made available to Journalists on Thursday in Jos, said the destruction occurred over two days, April 21 and 22, and accused suspected herders of invading and grazing cattle on cultivated lands.
“We express deep outrage and condemnation over the calculated and complete destruction of over 100 irrigation farmlands within two days in Jol community.
“This act has not only destroyed the primary source of livelihood for many families but also threatens food security and economic stability in the area.
“Reports from the community confirm that over 50 hectares of thriving crops were intentionally invaded and grazed upon by herders who drove their cattle into these farms. The losses suffered by affected farmers are enormous and cannot be overlooked,”; the statement read.
The group, however, acknowledged the efforts of the Special Task Force (STF) for arresting 21 cows that reportedly returned to the area but stressed that the action falls short of addressing the scale of destruction.
According to BYM, the seized cattle represent only a fraction of those involved and cannot compensate for the losses incurred, calling for urgent and more decisive measures to address the situation and prevent further occurrences.
