Troops of Operation Enduring Peace have killed two armed gunmen during a successful ambush in the Marit general area of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Plateau State.

The development was disclosed in a statement signed by Polycarp Oteh, Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, Operation Enduring Peace, and made available to journalists on Wednesday in Jos.

Intelligence-led crackdown on local terror
According to the statement, the operation was launched following credible intelligence regarding the movement of gunmen who have been terrorising local communities through violent attacks, sexual assault, and armed robbery.

“Upon sighting the criminals, troops sprang a successful ambush on the marauders, leading to the neutralisation of two armed gunmen, while others fled into nearby bushes under the cover of darkness,” the statement read.

The ambush occurred at approximately 7:49 p.m. on Tuesday near Doruwa Babuje. Following the engagement, troops recovered a locally fabricated rifle, five rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition, a cutlass, a jackknife, and a mobile phone from the scene.

Sustained presence and community vigilance
The Joint Task Force noted that troops have maintained their presence in Marit and Lajam villages to track and apprehend fleeing suspects.

Security agencies have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities to help consolidate current security gains in the region.
