Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has taken steps to restore the full leadership structure in the state by forwarding the nomination of Murtala Sule Garo to the State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as Deputy Governor.
The nomination, conveyed in a statement issued on April 22, 2026, by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, follows the recent vacancy in the office of the deputy governor.
According to the statement, the move is in line with Section 191(3) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, which empowers a governor to appoint a replacement where a vacancy exists.
The position became vacant after the resignation of former deputy governor Abdussalam Gwarzo on March 27, 2026.
Governor Yusuf noted that Garo’s nomination followed wide consultations with political stakeholders across the state, urging lawmakers to expedite action on the confirmation process.
Garo, 48, is described as a seasoned political administrator with over two decades of experience in both elective and appointive offices. His track record includes serving as state organising secretary of his party, special adviser to the Governor, and Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area.
He also held key positions as Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano State and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. In the 2023 general elections, he was the Deputy Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The government said the nomination is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen governance and improve service delivery in Kano State, as the administration seeks to consolidate its leadership team.
