President Bola Tinubu has appointed Taiwo Oyedele as Nigeria’s minister of finance, replacing Wale Edun in a cabinet reshuffle that brings a career technocrat to the centre of the country’s economic management.
The appointment completes a rapid transition for Oyedele, who moved from leading Nigeria’s tax reform efforts to serving briefly as minister of state for finance and now to the top job. It is a progression that reflects growing confidence in a man whose influence has, until recently, been largely behind the scenes.

Oyedele first came into national focus in 2023 when he was appointed to chair the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms. The role placed him at the heart of efforts to simplify Nigeria’s tax system and improve government revenue without overburdening citizens. His ability to communicate complex policy in clear, accessible terms quickly set him apart.
Before entering government, he spent more than two decades at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), where he rose from a graduate trainee in 2001 to become Africa Tax Leader, overseeing operations across more than 30 countries. His career combined private sector advisory work with public policy contributions, including roles with Nigeria’s national tax policy framework and international institutions.

His personal story adds context to that professional rise. Born in Ondo State and raised in Ikaram Akoko, Oyedele chose a less conventional academic path after missing out on university admission to study accounting. Rather than switch courses, he opted for the polytechnic route and remained focused on his goal. As a student, he reportedly sold his hostel bedspace to fund his professional exams, a decision that enabled him to qualify as a chartered accountant even before completing his Higher National Diploma.
That early discipline would define his career. Over the years, he built a reputation for precision, consistency and a deep understanding of fiscal systems. Colleagues often describe him as methodical and measured, more focused on getting policy right than on public attention.

Beyond his professional work, Oyedele is married with two children and is known to keep a relatively private personal life.
His elevation to minister of finance now places him at the centre of Nigeria’s economic challenges, where expectations are high, and the margin for error is narrow. For a man who has spent years designing reforms, the task ahead is no longer to recommend solutions but to deliver them.
