WhatsApp is preparing a significant update to its web platform by introducing a wide range of chat themes aimed at improving user customisation and aligning the desktop experience more closely with its mobile apps.
The update currently under development by Meta, its parent company could bring as many as 49 different themes to WhatsApp Web.
The new feature will allow users to personalise their chats by changing both message bubble colours and background wallpapers, offering a more visually engaging experience compared to the current limited options.
WhatsApp Web offers minimal customisation for now which is largely restricted to basic wallpapers and a simple light or dark mode.
The upcoming themes are expected to bridge this gap, bringing the web version closer to the richer design flexibility already available on iOS and Android devices.
The update may also introduce per-chat customisation, enabling users to assign different themes to individual conversations. This could make it easier to distinguish between personal, professional, and group chats at a glance.
The themes are expected to include multiple shades within colour families, giving users greater control over how their messaging interface looks and feels.
WhatsApp is maintaining its privacy approach as theme selections will only be visible to the user who applies them, meaning chat participants will not see each other’s customisations.
While the feature is said to be in advanced development, there is no official release date yet. It is expected to roll out first to beta users before becoming widely available later in the year.
The move reflects WhatsApp’s broader push to enhance its web platform, which has increasingly become a key tool for users seeking seamless communication across devices.
