Oyo begins waste segregation, receives CSR support from Altak industries

The Oyo State Government has kick-started a waste segregation initiative within the State Secretariat, following the donation of plastic waste bins by Altak Industries, Ibadan as part of efforts to promote proper waste categorisation and disposal.

The donation, facilitated through the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, is aimed at encouraging systematic separation of waste materials and strengthening environmental sustainability practices within government offices.

Receiving the bins on behalf of the State Government, Ademola Aderinto, Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, expressed appreciation to Altak Industries for the thoughtful gesture and commitment to environmental cleanliness.

He explained that the colour-coded bins, designated for paper, plastic and organic waste, would be distributed across offices within the Governor’s Office and other departments in the State Secretariat during the first phase of the initiative.

According to the Commissioner, the move is intended to serve as a practical example for citizens, demonstrating the importance of waste separation at source as a key step toward effective waste management.

He emphasised that when government offices lead by example through proper waste segregation, it encourages residents and private organisations to adopt similar environmentally responsible practices.

Aderinto noted that separating waste at source would prevent recyclable materials such as plastics, cans and glass from ending up in landfills, while ensuring that only organic waste is disposed of appropriately.

He added that recoverable materials could be supplied to recyclers, creating opportunities for citizens to generate income while reducing the volume of waste produced by offices, households and communities, thereby lowering waste evacuation costs.

The commissioner urged residents of Oyo State to embrace waste segregation, stressing that the government’s initiative is designed to promote responsible disposal habits and foster a cleaner environment across the state.

Speaking on behalf of Altak Industries, A. Philip stated that the donation formed part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)initiative to support the State Government’s efforts, while the Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening partnerships with corporate organisations to enhance environmental sustainability and improve waste management practices across Oyo State.
