Nigeria continues to make its mark on the global stage as young talents rise to showcase excellence in science and innovation.
Among them is Onwubiko Chimdiebube, a brilliant South-east Nigerian Maths Olympiad junior category winner, who has earned a place at the grand finale of the prestigious International STEM Olympiad in Rome.
Chimdiebube and Chisom Unachukwu, his mathematics teacher, arrived in Lagos recently for a consular appointment at the Italian Embassy for the International STEM Olympiad Grand Finale in Rome.
His journey not only highlights personal dedication and academic brilliance but also reflects the growing strength of Nigeria’s youth in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Besides winning the regional context of the south-east, Chimdiebube also won the first position in the Nigeria National Maths Competition a few days back in Abuja, earning him the qualification to represent the country at the junior category of the competition.
Other students from Nigeria, who will be participating in the global STEM competition in Rome, include Egejurum Onyedikachi and Don-Anele Munachimso, who were winners of the primary and senior categories of the Southeast Maths Olympia.
The next batch of students and their teacher will be in Lagos on April 27th for their appointment.
Both students and teachers will be going to Rome in Italy from July 2 to 8; this prestigious event, which is the sixth, brings together other students from 153 countries to compete in mathematics, science, technology, and engineering, following preliminary online qualification examinations.
The International STEM Olympiad competition encourages young minds, with winners receiving medals.
Alex Onyia, the convener of the Southeast Maths Olympiad, speaking about the chances of the Nigerian contestants, said, ” I’m confident that they will bring back the gold medals from each category. We will shine on the world stage.”

The education enthusiast revealed that the total cost of the trip for the three students, including flights, hotels, tours, and registration, is £32,200.
Onyia emphasised that he will rely on donations from deep pockets in the region to fund the logistics of the competition in Rome.
The three students were the winners of a regional maths competition that featured 11,522 students from Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Abia, and Ebonyi State. The Southeast Maths Olympiad aims to revitalise passion in mathematics amongst young students in the eastern region.
Onyia disclosed that the competition will now be an annual event to achieve lasting impact and cultivate competition in the eastern region. Nathan Nwachukwu, the co-founder at Terra Industries, supported the maiden edition of the event with N15 million.
