In a rapidly evolving global education landscape, a new institution is challenging traditional academic models while placing Africa at the centre of innovation. In this exclusive interview, LYDIA ENYIDIYA EKE spoke with the Chancellor of Osiri University, John Kalu Osiri, a professor, on the institution’s bold vision, unconventional structure, and commitment to developing transformative leaders. Excerpts:

Osiri University is relatively new. What inspired its creation?

Osiri University was founded to challenge outdated models of higher education that no longer serve the realities of our world, especially in Africa. We saw the need for an institution that prioritises innovation, critical thinking, and real societal impact over rote memorisation. Our goal is to build a new generation of scholars who are not just degree holders, but changemakers.

You describe Osiri as “a university of the future.” What does that mean in practical terms?

It means we are not bound by tradition for tradition’s sake. Osiri integrates academic rigor with practical knowledge and mentorship. We emphasise mastery, creativity, and emotional intelligence. Our students are trained to solve real-world problems, particularly within their communities and industries.

Your PhD in Business Innovation seems to be gaining attention. What makes it unique?

Our PhD is multidisciplinary and flexible. Students can enroll in our PhD with just a bachelor’s degree or HND, and complete the programme online in three years with a master’s degree in the first year, depending on prior coursework. What truly sets it apart is that students can focus their research on any area they are passionate about, whether in business, agriculture, data science, or the creative industries, so long as it drives innovation and impact.

There is a lot of interest in your tuition model. Can you explain how it works?

Certainly. The full tuition, valued at $30,000, is completely waived. Instead, students pay a modest administrative fee of $65 per three-credit course. For example, if a student takes ten courses in a year, that amounts to just $650 annually. Our aim is to remove financial barriers while maintaining academic quality.

Some may wonder how a tuition-free model sustains quality. What would you say to them?

It’s a valid question. Our model is lean, technology-driven, and mission-focused. We are not driven by profit but by impact. We invest in faculty who are not only experts but also committed to mentorship and ethical leadership. Quality is non-negotiable for us.

Osiri is said to be authorised in Nebraska and pursuing U.S. accreditation. What is the current status?

Yes, we are based in Lincoln, Nebraska, and have initiated the U.S. accreditation process. We are building carefully and deliberately to meet rigorous standards. Transparency and credibility are very important to us, and we encourage prospective students to follow our progress.

The university also offers the option to earn a master’s degree along the way. How does that work?

Students enrolled in the PhD can earn a master’s degree at no additional cost in fields such as Sustainable Leadership, Data Science, Food Systems, or Multimedia Studies. This allows for both depth and breadth in their academic journey.

Osiri emphasises Africa’s transformation. How does the university contribute to this vision?

We believe Africa must move from being a source of raw materials to a hub of innovation and industrial leadership. Osiri is designed to equip scholars with the mindset and tools to lead this transformation, whether in energy, agriculture, technology, or the creative economy.

You reference Pan-African thought and philosophies like Ubuntu. How are these reflected in your curriculum?

Our intellectual foundation is deeply rooted in African thought systems. We draw inspiration from thinkers like Claude Ake and the philosophy of Ubuntu— “I am because we are.” This shapes how we teach leadership, ethics, and community responsibility. All Osiri students complete a dedicated course on the Ubuntu Mind. We also offer a course on Law and Ubuntu, while intentionally embedding the “we” philosophy and humanitarian ethos across every course in the curriculum.

The Council of Elders includes notable figures. How do they influence the university?

We are privileged to have guidance from global thought leaders such as Mallence Bart-Williams, PLO Lumumba, and Chigozie Obioma. They serve in both advisory and fiduciary capacity, helping to shape the vision, values, and long-term direction of the university.

Who is the ideal candidate for Osiri University?

Osiri is for individuals who are curious, driven, and committed to making a difference. We have students from over 25 countries, including professionals, doctors, lawyers, academics, and entrepreneurs. What unites them is a desire to create meaningful change.

Finally, what message would you like to share with prospective students?

If you are ready to challenge yourself, think differently, and contribute to building the future—Osiri is for you. Education should not just advance your career; it should empower you to transform your world.
