Chaotic Rabat Final at Heart of Dispute
The dispute stems from the AFCON 2025 chaotic final held in Rabat on January 18, 2026. Senegal had initially secured a 1–0 victory, but the match was overshadowed by a 17-minute protest after Senegalese players walked off the pitch in response to a late penalty awarded to Morocco.
The fallout has triggered widespread debate across the continent, with Senegal expressing deep frustration over what it views as a boardroom reversal of a result settled on the pitch.
Dialogue and Diplomacy Take Centre Stage
According to a CAF statement, Motsepe’s visit will centre on open dialogue, bringing together CAF officials, the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF) leadership, and representatives of the Senegalese government.
CAS Appeal and Mounting Pressure
Anger continues to simmer within Senegal’s sporting circles following CAF’s disciplinary ruling. The FSF’s appeal to CAS hinges on claims that the team’s withdrawal from the final was driven by “compelling” circumstances.
While CAF has sought to calm the situation through carefully worded statements, mounting public and political pressure in Dakar has necessitated direct intervention from Motsepe.
By engaging with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and FSF leadership, CAF aims to ensure Senegal’s footballing progress is not overshadowed by the dispute.
Motsepe to Clarify CAF Position
Motsepe is also expected to hold a brief press engagement before departing Dakar, where he will clarify CAF’s stance on the Senegal-Morocco saga, underscoring the governing body’s commitment to hands-on leadership during one of its most sensitive crises.
