France legend Zinedine Zidane is reportedly close to a return to coaching, with strong links to the national team role.

According to Spanish outlet AS, Zidane has reached a full agreement with the French Football Federation to take charge of the French national football team after the 2026 World Cup. The appointment would mark his first managerial role since leaving Real Madrid in 2021.

Zidane has long been open about his ambition to coach France and deliberately turned down multiple club offers while waiting for the opportunity. His patience now appears set to be rewarded.

Current head coach Didier Deschamps is expected to remain in charge until the end of the 2026 World Cup, having already confirmed that the tournament will mark the conclusion of his tenure.

That timeline aligns perfectly with Zidane’s plans, positioning him to take over and lead a new era for Les Bleus.

France are among the favourites heading into the tournament, boasting a squad packed with elite talent. Zidane is anticipated to inherit that core as he begins his international managerial career.

Since stepping away from coaching, Zidane has remained one of the most sought-after figures in world football. During his time at Real Madrid, he won three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles, alongside multiple domestic honours.

While his name has been linked with several top jobs, including a potential return to Real Madrid, Zidane has prioritised the France role.

The transition from club football to the international stage represents a fresh challenge for the 53-year-old tactician.
