BusinessDay 2027 Election Insights poll on Nigeria’s electoral process has revealed concern over the absence of real-time transmission of election results, with many citizens expressing doubts about the credibility of outcomes.
Titled “2027 Election Insights: No real-time results, no trust?” the survey highlights fears that delays and lack of transparency could undermine voter confidence, fuel suspicions of manipulation, and affect trust in the broader democratic system.
Across multiple questions, a clear pattern emerged: many respondents believe that without real-time transmission, the integrity of the process is in question.
When asked what might be protected if results are not transmitted in real time, several participants pointed to interests beyond the voters. One respondent stated that “Nigeria’s economy, reputation and integrity are at stake,” suggesting that the issue goes beyond elections and affects public confidence in governance.
On whether real-time transmission would expose more irregularities, many agreed that it would. A respondent said, “Yes, without real-time transmission, there cannot be transparency,” reflecting a view that delays create room for interference.

Another respondent linked the use of technology to accountability, noting that “The real-time election results will usher purposeful leadership,” indicating a belief that transparent systems could influence the quality of leadership.
Concerns about elections without real-time transmission were also consistent. Many respondents expressed fear of altered results, lack of accountability and a gap between votes cast and outcomes.
The poll also explored comparisons with other sectors. Respondents were asked whether elections should differ from systems such as banking and the Bank Verification Number (BVN), which rely on digital infrastructure. A large number argued that elections should not be treated differently, pointing out that technology is already trusted in financial processes.
Resistance to real-time transmission was another key issue. Some respondents suggested that the resistance may be linked to a desire to control outcomes. Others pointed to institutional challenges and a lack of political will.
On what would build trust in elections without real-time transmission, many respondents struggled to provide clear answers. This reflects a wider concern that trust is closely tied to transparency and speed in result reporting.
In open comments, participants repeated the need for a process that reflects the will of voters. The tone of many responses showed frustration and a demand for change.
The findings point to a central issue: for many Nigerians, trust in elections is linked to how results are handled. Without real-time transmission, doubts remain.
As preparations for the 2027 elections begin, the poll highlights the need for electoral systems that address these concerns and restore confidence in the process.
