Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State and Chairman, PDP Governors’ Forum, has said that he prefers defecting to the African Democratic Party (ADC) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The governor said this while receiving the delegation of the ADC led by the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawan.
He said that the former Senate President and the national chairman of the ADC, David Mark, had extended an olive branch, inviting him to join the party.
The governor stated that his party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), is currently headless, and efforts to reconcile differences within the party had failed, leaving him under pressure from supporters to explore other options.
“We have found ourselves in a very serious ambivalence where our party is headless. We have to find a place within the opposition. That is where our fate and political destiny are taking us. And ADC appears to be a very enduring and acceptable platform”, he said.
Governor Mohammed emphasised that the decision to join the ADC was not taken lightly, but the party’s structure and leadership made it an attractive option.
He assured that discussions are ongoing and that the ADC is the preferred destination, but other options are being explored.
Babachir David Lawal, former SGF, leading the ADC delegation, said the party’s national chairman, David Mark, sent them to Bauchi to invite Governor Mohammed to join the ADC, citing his leadership qualities and experience.
Lawal warned that Nigeria faces disaster if the current Government continues in power beyond 2027, emphasising the need for opposition parties to unite and challenge the APC.
“We are here in Bauchi today at the instance of our National Chairman, Senator David Mark. Senator Mark sent us here because he’s fully aware that the coming battle between us in 2027 to elect new people to lead Nigeria can only be successful if all the various segments of the country that have good intentions and goodwill towards Nigerians are able to unite to stand and resist the impending disaster that is waiting for us in 2027,” Lawal said.
The governor’s potential defection has sparked interest, with some seeing it as a strategic move to challenge the APC in 2027.
