SoundCloud has introduced a new tool allowing artists to release music exclusively to their followers first, either temporarily or permanently, giving creators a direct way to engage their most dedicated supporters before wider distribution.
The feature, available to Artist Pro subscribers and dubbed ‘Follower Exclusive Releases,’ enables artists to gate tracks behind a simple follow. It is designed for sharing early demos, surprise drops, previews, or building anticipation ahead of official releases. The platform launched it with Dutch DJ and producer Chris Stussy, who made his single ‘What makes you feel…’ available exclusively to SoundCloud followers ahead of his debut album Lost, Found & Forgotten…, set for release on Friday, April 3.
In Nigeria’s vibrant music ecosystem, where thousands of independent artists, producers, rappers, and singers rely on free platforms for raw uploads and early buzz, SoundCloud continues to serve as a key starting point. While Spotify, YouTube, Boomplay, and Audiomack dominate overall streaming and discovery, emerging Afrobeats, hip-hop, and experimental acts often begin on SoundCloud before migrating to major services.
Major Nigerian stars maintain strong presences on the platform. Burna Boy leads with the highest following, followed by Wizkid, Davido, Tems, Rema, and others, many boasting tens to hundreds of thousands of followers. These profiles help sustain community engagement through real-time comments, direct messaging, reposts, and fan-driven discovery.
SoundCloud described the feature as a means to foster an active listening culture. “Follower Exclusive Releases builds on that foundation by giving artists a way to reward the day ones and the fans who are most tapped in,” the company said. For artists, it offers opportunities to experiment, build momentum, and strengthen audience relationships. For fans, following now unlocks access to music “they won’t hear anywhere else—at least not yet.”
The rollout comes as SoundCloud hosts hundreds of millions of tracks. In December, the platform partnered with Auracles, the digital identity platform founded by Grammy-winning artist Imogen Heap, integrating it into its Benefits Partner Program. Artists can now link profiles and import projects between the platforms for improved data clarity, protection, and creative control.
The move underscores SoundCloud’s focus on tools that deepen fan-artist connections in a competitive streaming landscape.
