A United Kingdom court has sentenced Chukwuemeka Ahanonu, a Nigerian national, to life imprisonment for the killing of a 56-year-old woman, Nila Patel, following a violent attack in Leicester.
The incident occurred on June 24, 2025, along Infirmary Road in Leicester, where Ahanonu, 24, launched a fatal attack on Patel shortly after crashing his car.
According to Leicestershire Police, the suspect had been driving erratically around the city centre before the attack.
Witness accounts and CCTV footage showed him swerving across lanes, running red lights, and veering dangerously toward pedestrians.
His vehicle eventually crashed, after which he fled the scene on foot.

Patel, who had just alighted from a bus and was walking home, became an unintended victim of what authorities described as a random act of violence.
Ahanonu attacked her on the street, inflicting severe injuries.
Security personnel from the nearby Leicester Royal Infirmary intervened and restrained the suspect until police officers arrived.
Medical staff rushed Patel for treatment, but she sustained critical injuries, including a fractured skull and significant brain trauma.
She died two days later, on June 26, prompting authorities to re-arrest Ahanonu on suspicion of murder.
Investigators revealed that Ahanonu had been under the influence of cannabis at the time of the incident.
A search of his vehicle uncovered dealer quantities of the drug valued at over £3,000, along with three iPhones.
He had earlier pleaded guilty to multiple offences, including dangerous driving, possession of cannabis with intent to supply, and assaulting an emergency worker after biting a female police officer.
Following a trial at Leicester Crown Court, a jury found Ahanonu guilty of murder.
He was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment on Tuesday.

Emma Matts, a Senior Investigating Officer, , described the incident as “a horrific, violent and random attack” on an innocent woman.
“She was simply walking home when she was subjected to this brutal assault,” Matts said, noting that CCTV footage of Ahanonu’s driving before the crash was “frightening and disturbing.”
She also praised members of the public and emergency responders for their swift actions, stating that their intervention in restraining the suspect and assisting the victim played a crucial role in securing justice.
