…says excelling as minister is current priority

Adebayo Adelabu, Minister of Power, has announced ongoing government efforts to resolve gas constraints that continue to affect the power supply in Nigeria.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, the minister noted public frustration over poor electricity supply. While the shortage has been attributed to inadequate gas, the government expects these interventions to deliver improved supply across the country within the next 14 days.

Government implements measures to stabilise electricity supply

Adelabu said the government had begun implementing targeted measures aimed at stabilising gas availability to power plants. He expressed confidence that these interventions would gradually translate into improved supply for households and businesses.

”I want to apologise to Nigerians officially for this temporary issue that is leading to the hardship being experienced, especially during this dry season,” Adelabu said. He noted that while businesses, schools, and industries have been affected, the situation arose from factors beyond the ministry’s control.

Two-week timeline set for power generation improvements

The minister stated that improvements should be visible within two weeks. A committee is currently tracking compliance with domestic supply obligations by gas companies to ensure power plants receive necessary resources. The government also believes that as payments commence, gas suppliers will be further encouraged to maintain supply.

Adelabu assured the public that the government is working to ensure the country achieves better power supply, with plans to increase generation to 6,000 megawatts before the end of this year.

Trajectory for 2026 targets 6,000MW milestone

”We are working 24-7 to ensure we return to the trajectory of 2025, when the public commended our progress,” the minister said. He added that the goal is to exceed previous service levels as the 2026 election year approaches.
Beyond generation, Adelabu noted that transmission and distribution would also see improvements. He emphasised that the 6,000-megawatt target remains a priority for the end of the year to benefit all Nigerians.

Acceleration of presidential metering programme

The government intends to continue the nationwide deployment of meters under the Presidential Metering Programme. Adelabu stressed the necessity of firm, respected contracts among all players in the power sector, including gas suppliers, generating companies, and distribution companies.
”We need to accelerate to ensure that every household, institution, and business has a meter to measure consumption,” Adelabu said. He added that the enforcement of performance contracts must be strengthened across the value chain.

Ministerial priorities and political outlook

Regarding his political future, Adelabu stated that his current priority is excelling in his role as the Minister of Power. He noted that resolving supply challenges and tackling unforeseen obstacles remains his immediate focus.
While he acknowledged interest in the gubernatorial contest for Oyo State, Adelabu remarked that service at either the national or subnational level is his primary driver. “Whether I will remain here or contest is a matter of time,” he concluded.
